Inside the work

A whole world begins with one idea.

The biggest highlight of this dance drama lies in the fact that it does not simply replicate the life story of Ip Man, but instead employs an ingeniously conceived dual-narrative "play-within-a-play" structure.

Within the play (Ip Man's story): Set in the 1950s and 1960s, it tells the story of Ip Man carrying the signboard of "Wing Chun Hall" as he goes to Hong Kong to make his way. On the street of martial arts schools, he spars with masters of various schools, and ultimately breaks down sectarian barriers to establish his own school and legacy.

Outside the play (the story of the light-seekers): Set nearly half a century later, it tells the story of a Shenzhen film crew facing numerous difficulties while shooting the movie Wing Chun, only to be ultimately inspired by Ip Man's spirit and persevere in pursuing their dreams.

The two timelines are seamlessly switched through a revolving stage, paying tribute not only to the grandmaster but also to every ordinary person striving for their dreams.
