Inside the work

A whole world begins with one idea.

Jing Hai Shan is a re‑imagined creation myth. It selects eight tales from Classic of Mountains and Seas, including Jingwei Filling the Sea, Yu the Great Taming the Flood, and Chang’e Flying to the Moon. It re‑defines the genesis of humanity as well as the struggles between humankind and nature.

Within this journey, there exists no divide between performers and audience, nor any concept of time and space — only the experience of the present moment. While all outward forms draw on modern and futuristic aesthetics, the inner essence embodies Chinese spirit. Employing cutting‑edge stage language and world‑class technical tools, the production co‑interprets the spirit of these stories together with audiences. It transports spectators aboard a “Cosmic Ark”, delivering an all‑round immersive experience. The tales from Classic of Mountains and Seas are re‑envisioned within a dream‑like realm, an approach we term the “in‑BOX Spatial Stage”.

Jing Hai Shan is an integrated synthesis of visual art, installation art, wire‑aerial stunts (wirework), dance and theatre. Its flagship technical feature is touch‑interactive real‑time rendered special‑effect video. Besides delivering striking visual impact, the visuals respond dynamically to performers’ acting, seamlessly merging the setting with the audience. Surrounding wirework turns all four walls into performance space. Treating vertical walls as ground, performers run, leap and dance at a 90‑degree angle in mid‑air, creating a breath‑taking sense of immersion for audiences looking upward. Zero‑distance interaction between performers and viewers is fully realised within this three‑dimensional space. Accompanied by a live band as narrative vehicle, the show generates live animated‑film‑like scenes — a domestic innovation in China.

Audiences may pause, rest and gaze within the space, run alongside performers, interact with them, or even take part in the performance first‑hand. They thereby perceive human desire and passion, the hardships of struggle and the joy of triumph. Human origins and future share the same starting point and destination; life and death stand as equals. These visual forms and underlying themes exert a powerful emotional and psychological impact on spectators.
