Inside the work

A whole world begins with one idea.

The Chinese language production of Roméo et Juliette, the Musical is helmed by Gérard Presgurvic, the original composer, and Carl Portail, the original director. They cocreated the show alongside a Chinese team led by music director Liu Zhuo and lyric director Liang Mang.

Speaking about the Chinese adaptation, Director Carl Portail remarked, “This is a process of recreation. All its set construction, set pieces, costumes, hair and make-up, lighting design and sound design have been completely redesigned for this version.”

For instance, many China exclusive props have been introduced in the numbers Les Beaux, Les Laids and Comment Lui Dire The ball scene features a magnificent new giant crystal chandelier, breaking away from the original stage design. In choreography, the director integrated Chinese dance elements to devise numerous brand-new sequences. The Chinese language staging brings fresh nuances to this timeless tale.
